Of all the questions I get on a call out, “what’s this going to cost me” comes up almost as often as “do I actually have wood borer.” Fair question. But wood borer isn’t like a standard cockroach or ant call out, where I can throw you a number over the phone and be roughly right.
Let’s talk about it.
Why There’s No Fixed Price for Wood Borer Treatment
With most household pests, one visit tells you almost everything. Wood borer doesn’t work that way.
The larvae do their damage inside the timber, out of sight, for years before an adult beetle ever chews its way out.
So the exit holes and dust you can actually see aren’t a reliable guide to how much timber underneath has been affected, or how far it’s spread through a roof void. I need to get up there and look before I can put a number on it, not the other way around.
Anyone who quotes you a firm price before setting foot on your property is guessing.
What Actually Drives the Cost
Once I’ve done that inspection, a handful of things actually move the price.
Treatment method. A localised drill-and-inject on a few affected beams costs a fraction of fumigating an entire roof void.
Size and accessibility. A large roof takes longer to treat than a small one, and a boarded ceiling with no existing access hatch often means cutting a panel before we can even get up there.
How far it’s spread. Treating a handful of affected trusses is a different job to treating a whole roof structure that’s had years to develop.
What’s actually being treated. A single piece of furniture is a much smaller job than structural roof timber, and the two aren’t priced the same way.
Whether a certificate’s involved. If you need a beetle certificate alongside treatment, usually because you’re selling, that’s also worth mentioning upfront.
A Realistic Range (And Why Cheap Quotes Worry Me)
As a general benchmark, wood-destroying insect treatments elsewhere in South Africa are commonly quoted from around R20 per square metre of roof space upward, with household pest jobs generally landing somewhere between R750 and R4,000 depending on severity and property size. Wood borer usually sits toward the higher end of that, since it involves more roof access and a more thorough treatment than a standard call out.
Durban adds its own factor on top. Our humidity means infestations here often have a head start on drier inland regions, and older homes in areas like Berea, Morningside, and Glenwood are still carrying original timber roof trusses that have had decades to accumulate damage.
This is exactly why an unusually cheap quote should worry you more than it reassures you. A price that undercuts everyone else is cutting something, and treated badly, wood borer just means paying for it twice: once now, and again when the real infestation resurfaces.
Before you accept any quote, wood borer or otherwise, make sure it actually spells out:
- The treatment method being used, not just “wood borer treatment” as a vague line item
- A written certificate, if that’s part of what you’ve asked for
- A stated warranty period, so you know how long the treatment is protected for
- The technician’s registration number, so you can check they’re actually licensed to do this work

Left long enough, particularly in a roof truss, that timber problem becomes a structural one, and then you’re not comparing pest control quotes anymore, you’re comparing roofing quotes.
