“How much to get rid of the rats?” is usually the second thing people ask me, right after “are they in my roof?” It’s a fair question. But rats aren’t like a standard ant or cockroach call-out, where I can give you a number over the phone and be roughly right.
If you’ve heard something in the ceiling and want to know what you’re in for, this article explains what drives the price of rat control in Durban, what a proper quote should include, and how to avoid paying twice. If you’re still comparing companies, start with what makes a good pest control company.

Why Rat Control Can’t Be Priced Over the Phone
Because most of what decides the price is hidden. The droppings and gnaw marks you can see tell you rats are there. They don’t tell me how many there are, where they’re nesting or how far it has spread through the property.
A single rat that wandered into a garage is a very different job from an established colony in the roof of a double-storey home, yet both get called “a rat problem” on the phone. That’s why every job of ours starts with an inspection, as part of our rat and rodent control, instead of a number that changes once I’m up in the roof.
It’s also why I’m wary of anyone who quotes a fixed price for rats without seeing the property. If you’d like the wider picture across all pests, we’ve covered that in how much pest control costs in Durban, but rats are one of the pests where the gap between a small job and a big one is widest.
What Drives the Cost of Rat Control
A few things make the biggest difference, and it helps to understand them before anyone gives you a number.
Which rodent, and how many. Roof rats, Norway rats and mice are treated differently, and a small, new problem is simpler than an established one. Rats breed quickly, so waiting rarely makes it cheaper.
Where they are. Rats in a garden or outbuilding are easier to reach than a nest in a roof void or wall cavity. Access matters too, because a low, tight roof space takes a lot longer to work through than an open one.
The size and type of property. A flat, a family home, a complex and a warehouse are all different jobs, with different amounts of ground to cover and different places for rats to hide.
How many visits it takes. Some problems settle quickly and others need more than one visit. Ask what the treatment covers and get it in writing.
Home or business. Restaurants, warehouses and other commercial sites usually need ongoing monitoring and records, not a once-off visit. Our pest control for Durban businesses page explains how that works.
What a Proper Quote Should Include
Whoever you choose, ask for a written quote that spells out:
- What was found and where, including the species and the nesting areas
- Which treatment will be used and where it will be placed
- How many visits are included, and what happens if activity returns
- What isn’t included, so there are no surprises later
- What it means for your children and pets
If a quote is one line and a number, you don’t know what you’re buying.
Already had a quote that felt too good to be true? Worth getting a second opinion before you sign anything. See how our Rat and Rodent Control works.
Why the Cheapest Quote So Often Costs More
A very low price can mean bait put out with no proper inspection and no work on entry points. If the rats are back a month later, you pay again, and by then there are usually more of them. A rat problem that’s been treated in the wrong place doesn’t go away, it just goes quiet for a while.
That doesn’t mean the most expensive quote is the best either. Compare like for like: the same inspection, the same treatment and the same follow-up. And if you already have a written quote from another registered operator, send it through and see how our Beat Any Quote offer works.
What Waiting Really Costs You
This is the part people tend to underestimate. Rats in a roof chew through insulation and wiring, which is a fire risk, and their droppings and urine build up in the roof space the longer they stay. Every week without treatment usually means more rats, not fewer, and a bigger job at the end of it.
So if you’re tempted to wait for a better time, or to try shop-bought poison first, keep in mind that time is the one thing rats have on their side.
Once-Off Treatment or Service Plan? (It Depends)
For most homes, a thorough treatment is enough, as long as the food and water that drew the rats in are dealt with too.
A regular service makes more sense where the risk keeps coming back, such as properties next to open ground or with a lot of food waste, and businesses that need records for compliance. For those, monthly or bi-monthly visits keep numbers down before they become a problem. That once-off or ongoing choice is also what separates an exterminator from a pest control service.
How to Get an Accurate Quote
The easiest way is to tell us:
- What you’ve seen or heard, and where
- How long it’s been going on
- Whether it’s a house, flat or business, and roughly how big it is
- Whether you have pets or young children
- Photos, if possible, of droppings or gnaw marks
The more we know, the better we can prepare, and the sooner we can give you a number you can rely on.
Rat Control Cost in Durban: The Short Answer
The cost of rat control depends on the species, where they’re nesting and how much follow-up is needed. That’s why a number over the phone is usually a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much does rat control cost in Durban?
It depends on the species, how established the problem is, where the rats are nesting, the size of the property and how much follow-up is needed. That’s why a number over the phone is usually a guess. Send us photos and details and we’ll tell you what to expect.
Why can’t you give me a price over the phone?
Most of what decides the price is hidden in the roof or walls. One rat in a garage and a colony in a roof void are very different jobs, even though both get called a rat problem.
Is a once-off treatment enough, or do I need a service plan?
For most homes, a thorough treatment is enough. A regular service makes more sense for properties where the risk keeps coming back, and for businesses that need records for compliance.
What happens if the rats come back after treatment?
Usually it means an entry point or food source wasn’t dealt with. We’ll help you find it, and if another treatment is needed, we’ll quote it before we start.
Should I just go with the cheapest quote?
Not necessarily. A very low price can mean no proper inspection and no follow-up, and you end up paying again if the rats return. Compare like for like, and ask for the quote in writing.
