How to Deal With Wood Borer in Durban: What to Look For, and Why It’s Not a DIY Job

Wood borer is a different kind of pest problem to most of what we deal with. You don’t usually see it happening. You see the aftermath, and by the time you notice, it’s often been active for a while already. That’s what makes it worth understanding properly, not just reacting to.

Let’s talk about it.

Where They Live (And Why Durban Homes Are a Target)

Wood borer beetles lay their eggs in timber, and the larvae do the real damage, tunnelling through the wood from the inside for months or even years before they emerge as adult beetles. By the time you see the exit holes, the damage underneath is usually more extensive than it looks on the surface.

A few things make Durban homes particularly attractive to them.

Humidity. Just like with cockroaches, our climate here in Durban works against us. Damp, humid conditions are exactly what wood borer larvae need to survive, and older Durban homes with roof timbers, floorboards, and structural beams exposed to moisture are prime targets.

Untreated or older timber. Structural timber that wasn’t treated properly when the home was built, or furniture and beams that have never been treated at all, are far more vulnerable. Borer beetles go for softer, untreated wood far more readily than sealed or treated timber.

Poor ventilation. Roof voids and under-floor spaces that don’t get good airflow trap moisture, which is exactly the environment wood borer thrives in. If your roof space feels stuffy and damp when you go up there, that’s worth paying attention to.

Signs You’re Dealing With Wood Borer

This is the part people usually miss until it’s a real problem. Keep an eye out for:

  • Small round exit holes in wood, usually 1 to 2mm across, often in clusters
  • Fine, powdery dust (frass) collecting beneath these holes, it looks a bit like sawdust
  • Hollow-sounding wood when you tap it, a strong sign the inside has been eaten away
  • Crumbling edges on skirting boards, furniture legs, or roof timber
  • Weakened or sagging structural timber, in more advanced cases

If you’re seeing fresh frass (the sawdust-like powder around those small holes in the wood), that’s the clearest sign the infestation is active right now.

What You Can Do Yourself (With Honest Limits)

I’ll be upfront with you here: wood borer is one of the pests where DIY genuinely has the least to offer. There are things worth doing, but they’re prevention, not cure.

  • Improve ventilation. Get airflow moving through roof voids and under-floor spaces where you can. Reducing moisture is one of the most effective things you can do to make your home less attractive to borer in the first place.
  • Treat exposed timber. Untreated wood, especially in roof spaces or garages, benefits from a proper wood preservative. This is worth doing proactively, not just after you’ve seen a problem.
  • Deal with damp and leaks. Roof leaks, gutter overflow, or rising damp near timber all increase risk. Fixing these protects your wood as much as it protects everything else.
  • Off-the-shelf borer sprays. These can kill beetles on the surface of the wood, but they don’t reliably penetrate deep enough to reach larvae already tunnelling inside.

What none of this does is deal with larvae that are already inside your timber. That needs a different approach entirely (ideally through a proper woodborer pest control).

Why Wood Borer Needs Professional Treatment

This is where wood borer is genuinely different from something like ants or cockroaches.

A few reasons this isn’t something to handle yourself:

  • The damage is inside the wood, not on it. Surface treatments can’t reach larvae tunnelling through the centre of a beam. Professional treatment is formulated to penetrate deep enough to actually deal with active infestation, not just the beetles you can see.
  • It’s a structural issue, not a cosmetic one. Left untreated, wood borer can seriously compromise roof timbers, floorboards, and load-bearing structures over time.
  • Compliance matters, especially if you’re selling, building, or renting. A proper treatment comes with a beetle certificate and, where needed, an entomologist report, documentation that’s often required for property sales, new builds, or landlord sign-off. This isn’t just paperwork for the sake of it. The South African Pest Control Association requires a detailed inspection of a property’s timber before a sale goes through, precisely because wood borer damage is so easy to miss until it’s already extensive. Buyers, agents, and even banks issuing home loans rely on that certificate to know what they’re actually dealing with, which is exactly why getting it right matters as much as the treatment itself.
  • We know what we’re looking at. Telling the difference between old, inactive damage and a live infestation takes experience. Treating the wrong thing, or treating unnecessarily, wastes your time and money.
